Implementation Research Pilot projects – CLOSED


Sydney Vital is calling for proposals for implementation research pilot projects via an Expression of Interests (EOI) process.
Sydney Vital will provide financial support for a number of implementation research projects in the 2015 calendar year.

This expression of interest (EOI) may include (but are not limited to) the following themes:
• Educate Sydney Vital member network on implementation (T3) of evidence based supportive care strategies for cancer symptoms and treatment side effects.
• Develop Health Professional Education modules using e-learning techniques which can be made available to clinicians in NSW.
• Identify new clinical pathways or techniques based on the evidence based guidelines suitable for implementation
• Test methods for delivery of psychosocial support and reduction of treatment toxicity
• Evaluating new approaches to breast reconstruction and their impact on Quality of Life (QoL).
• Identify ways to improve management of survivorship issues in cancer patients.
• Test new methods of care or prognostic factors for patients with late stage cancer.

Up to $25,000 in funding to support the undertaking of an implementation research project. The funding must be spent within 12 months of receiving the award. Management team may allocate funding to one or more projects.

Supportive care, end stage tumour, and end-of life management – CLOSED


Sydney Vital is seeking 2 individuals to act as leader for Pillar 4:
“Supportive care, end stage tumours, and end-of life management”. The Pillar’s aims are deliberately broad to allow scope to explore and exploit strengths within the partner organisations. The Pillar provides base funding of $10 k p.a. (which can be further leveraged) to support activities to bring Pillar members together to develop new programs of research, both basic science and clinical, and to expand networks and collaborations. Ideally, the Pillars would have outputs that impact on the T1, T2 and T3 domains of translational research as defined by the CINSW, or the Sydney Vital Flagship Programs 1, 2, or 3 (www.sydneyvital.org.com). The Pillar leader is ideally an early to mid-career researcher who is currently developing their research portfolio.

Flagship 1 Seed Funding – CLOSED

The Sydney Vital Flagship 1 program has up to $25,000 available to encourage the development of new research ideas in preclinical studies of treatment-resistant cancers. Projects should concern
(i) new therapies for treatment-resistant cancers, or
(ii) the identification of new biomarkers of treatment resistance.

Applications are sought from Sydney Vital members for two 1-year grants of up to $12,000 each in either of the above areas. Each applicant may submit only one application in this funding round. These grants are not intended to support the extension or expansion of existing research projects, but are to seed new ideas, with the goal of generating data to a point where external funding may be sought.

microRNA Translational Research

The Kolling Institute of Medical Research is the principal centre of health and medical research affiliated with the Northern Sydney Local Health District. As a centre of research excellence the Kolling has a major role in research training through the Sydney Medical School (Northern Clinical School) of the University of Sydney.

The Cancer Genetics Adrenal Laboratory studies neoplasms of the adrenal cortex (adrenocortical tumours) and of the adrenal medulla (phaeochromocytomas). Overall the work focuses on discovering markers to assist with the early identification of malignancy, and finding genes which will lead to a greater understanding of the pathogenesis of adrenal tumours and thereby ultimately improving the clinical management of these patients and their families. Adrenocortical cancer (ACC) is an aggressive malignancy with limited treatment options. Recent studies have shown that a number of microRNAs are down-regulated in ACC, indicating their potential as a tumour suppressor gene and therapeutic target.

We are pleased to offer a PhD scholarship to a skilled and motivated PhD candidate to join our translational research team headed by Professor Stan Sidhu. We are seeking applications from outstanding medical science/biology graduates who are interested in pursuing a career in translation medical research, in particular cancer research. The role involves an interdisciplinary research project elucidating the mechanism of microRNA as a tumour suppressor gene and potential therapeutic target in ACC. This project will provide an opportunity to gain experience in cancer genetics, cell biology and cancer translational research.

The successful full-time candidates will be supervised by Dr Jing Ting Zhao and Professor Stan Sidhu and. The position is located in the Cancer Genetics Group of the Kolling Institute of Medical Research, Royal North Shore Hospital, St Leonard, NSW, 2065.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor of Medical Science/Biology with Class I Honours or equivalent
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality and detailed research experiments and analysis of results.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work as a part of team
  • Australian citizenship or permanent residency

Amount awarded:
$25,392 per annum (tax exempt), up to 3 years. The stipend rate is indexed annually on 1st January.
